چکیده

All the objects of our perceptive world are distinct in time and space and have distinct properties, i.e., they appear at certain times, in certain positions, and are equipped with qualities specific to them. What is valid for all the percepts, consequently, also applies to what one can hear namely, what we shall call the auditory events in the following. People who listen to a speaker have, for example, an auditory event speaker which is perceptually present during a certain period of time, in a certain region in space, and posesses certain properties such as specific loudness, pitch, timbre, etc. In the framework of this essay our primary interest is the spatial distinctness of auditory percepts, in other words, the positions and spatial extensions of the auditory events. We want to explain how these positions and extensions depend on certain features of the sound signals which are received and processed by the human auditory system. These dependencies, i.e., the facts of spatial hearing, are of great practical importance for music, among other things in the following contexts.

Validity and reliability of the Persian version of spatial hearing questionnaire

Background: Our hearing ability in space is critical for hearing speech in noisy environment and localization. The Spatial Hearing Questionnaire (SHQ) has been devised to focus only on spatial haring tasks (e.g., lateralization, distance detection and binaural detection). The aim of the present study was to determine the reliability and validity of the Persian translation of the SHQ (Spatial ...

Investigating the Effect of Music on Spatial Learning in a Virtual Reality Task

Background: Spatial learning and navigation is a fundamental cognitive ability consisting of multiple cognitive components. Despite intensive efforts conducted with the assistance of virtual reality technology and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) modality, the music effect on this cognition and the involved neuronal mechanisms remain elusive. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the...

Understanding music with cochlear implants

Direct stimulation of the auditory nerve via a Cochlear Implant (CI) enables profoundly hearing-impaired people to perceive sounds. Many CI users find language comprehension satisfactory, but music perception is generally considered difficult. However, music contains different dimensions which might be accessible in different ways. We aimed to highlight three main dimensions of music processing...

Acoustic Sensitivity of the Saccule and Daf Music

Introduction:   The daf is a large Persian frame drum used as a musical instrument in both popular and classical music which can induce a percussive sound at low frequencies (146–290 Hz) with peaks of up to 130 dBspl. The percussive sounds have a power distribution in the region of saccular sensitivity. In view of the saccular stimulation by sound in humans, we decided to use cervical vestibu...
